Carpentry

The Carpentry programme is designed to provide people with some of the skills and qualifications for work in the building and construction industry.

Course Length
24 - 35 weeks on average.
Ongoing - flexible entry and exit times.

Course Content

Course content includes industry and generic units from the National Qualifications Framework:
  • Use of woodworking hand tools
  • Use of electric tools
  • Sketches & working drawings for elementary construction projects
  • Knowledge of building calculations
  • Knowledge of timber selection and use
  • Sub-floor framing and flooring construction
  • Construction
  • First Aid
  • Job search skills
  • Self management and social skills
  • Literacy & numeracy

Qualifications & Certificates

  • National Certificate in Building Construction and Allied Trades Skills Level 1 (40 credits)
  • National Certificate in Building Construction and Allied Trades Skills Level 2 (41 credits)
  • Skills Update Certificate
  • Skills Update Record of Learning
  • NZQA Record of Learning
  • First Aid Certificate

Employment and Further Training
Upon completion of this course, employment or further study within the following fields are possible:

Employment:

  • Building and construction
  • Commercial and residential carpenter

Further Study:

  • Modern Apprenticeship
  • Trade Certificate Programmes offered by Polytechnics
